Vermillion Star
(Mediaster aequalis)

Comments : This is another of the many colorful sea stars that frequent Puget Sound. These starfish brighten up any dive, with their brilliant red coloration. There texture is also very unusual - king of a flat embossed pattern. I usually find them with the tips of their arms upturned slightly, even more so than this one is doing. These stars tend to feed on Sea Pens, ascidians, algae, and sponges and usually do not grow bigger than about 6 inches.
