Comments : Crescent Gunnels and Saddleback Gunnels appear very similar until you see them side by side. Each gunnel is named for the markings along it's back. I really enjoy gunnels on night dives - they are often seen peering out from under solid cover. Occasionally, we get to see them in the open, like this one. I have seen rockfish and sculpins feeding on gunnels. When swallowed tail first, the gunnel appears to double over into a "U" shape to make it difficult for the fish to swallow it.
